About Ian Ridley

Ian has over 35 years experience of walking and rock climbing. Not only in Scotland, the Lakes, North Wales and on Dartmoor, but also in the Alps, having summited Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Eiger to name just a few of the well known classic alpine peaks. In the autumn of 2009 he climbed Ama Dablam (6856m) in the Himalayas and in May 2010 he attempted to climb Everest (8848m) via the North Ridge. Sadly a chronic chest infection and contracting Hepatitis E prevented him from climbing above Camp 3 at 8300m.

In the Spring of 2012 Ian returned to Everest and successfully summited on the 25 May at 6.40am.

Ian is 53 years old, and has been walking since the age of the 11 when he first climbed Snowdon in the pouring rain. He wasn’t put off by the wet weather and mist, only by the dreadful cagoule he had to wear- best described as a “nylon bin liner”!

His outdoor qualifications include both the Mountain Leader Summer and Winter Awards and the Single Pitch Award for rock climbing, however it is his wealth of experience that sets him apart from others. He holds a current outdoor first aid certificate and is a former member of his local mountain rescue team – the Ashburton Team of the Dartmoor Rescue Group.

Customer Feedback

‘I now know what I need to do in order to be able to go out with a mate and climb. Ian made it seem accessible, whereas beforehand the thought of just going up to a real cliff and putting stuff in that you might have to rely on to save your life was a bit daunting! Ian is a really nice guy too. Very chillaxed and friendly. We had a good chat about Skye, I can’t wait.’

Client testimonials

‘Your light hand on the tiller was exactly right with the four of us, just a little caution here and a little word of encouragement there. And safe in the knowledge that someone was taking responsibility for knowing where we were going and making the calls about the weather.’

About Mountain-skills.com

Mountain-skiils is personally overseen by Ian and was set up in 2009 with a desire to help people to enjoy the beauty of the UK’s hills in all weathers and throughout the whole year. During the last 7 years he has helped many people to achieve those dreams that independence and self reliance can bring. He has also given numerous talks to local school children to hopefully inspire them to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

Mountaineering combines both physical and mental challenges, promotes personal growth and mental acuity which is very useful in other areas of life. Participants must learn to focus on solutions that will get them to their destination whilst constantly assessing the dangers that may keep them from it.

Ian’s philosophy is simple – to share his knowledge and experience to enable clients to become independent and get the most out of the British hills and mountains and indeed further afield – safely and enjoyably.

Importantly and for your peace of mind Mountain-skills.com is fully insured up to £5 million for all the activities offered.
